Dan & Brent crack the seal on Watchman, the first release in Round Barn Distillery’s Lighthouse Series. This is an 8-year barrel-strength bourbon from Baroda, Michigan — Distiller’s Series Select, bottled at 116.2 proof, Batch 1, Bottle 400 of 804. We picked this one up at The Bourbon Spot in Hudsonville and took it home for a fresh-crack tasting. The color is deep and striking. On the nose and palate we get dark sugars, caramel, toffee, mature oak, vanilla, and dark/stone fruit, with a nice chocolatey/mocha note on the finish. Even as a neck pour it’s impressive for their own distillate — and we both agree it should open up even more with a little time in the glass. Thumbs up from both of us. If you find the Watchman out in the wild, it’s worth grabbing. This is bottle No. 30 from last night's release in Hudsonville. Kentucky-sourced, 99% corn and 1% malted barley, 71.5% ABV. Light whiskey in name only. NOSE Werther's chocolate caramel swirl. Dark sugar, caramel, toffee. It smells like candy. PALATE Creamy, caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Nice legs, beautiful color, and a Kentucky hug that brings warmth without running hot. HOW TO DRINK IT Neat if you like high proof. A big cube is safe. No wrong way. VALUE Picked up for under $90. Dan's guess was about $79.80. That's a fair number for barrel proof at 8.5 years.
